All that stress, anxiety and tension have not just taken a toll on our mental and physical wellbeing but also greatly affected our appearance and our skin, making us look at ourselves in the mirror only to say, 'I need a break.'

#1 - Establish a basic skincare routine and stick to it
We all have different skin types, and every skin type comes with its own set of challenges and needs. But the first step to ensuring your skin stays well-nourished and youthful is to develop a simple skincare routine that suits you. So, this new year, establish a basic skincare regime customised to your skincare needs. Here is what you need to get started:
A gentle cleanser that is suitable for your skin type
An exfoliating scrub to remove dead skin cells
A moisturiser with sunscreen (SPF) to protect against harmful UV rays

#2. Don’t Sleep in Your Makeup
Sleeping with makeup on can cause a host of skin issues, says Burgess, from clogged pores and breakouts to extreme lip dryness, and you risk severe damage to your eyes. “That’s a bad habit a lot of people have,” says Burgess.
Luckily, this resolution is simple: Wash your face before your head hits the pillow. If you’re wearing oil-based concealer, you’ll need a solvent-based makeup removal — Burgess recommends foaming cleansers “which can emulsify most foundations and lipstick.” Be sure to use a gentle cleanser around the eyes however, as they are more sensitive.

#3 – Keep your skin well-hydrated daily
Just like your body, your skin needs its daily dose of hydration. A daytime moisturiser with a broad-spectrum sunscreen is perfect for everyday use to keep your skin well hydrated and nourished. If you need extra moisture, include a multifunctional daily serum underneath your daytime moisturiser to help improve your skin’s softness, smoothness, radiance and glow.

#4: Get Ingredient-Savvy
Start familiarizing yourself with the different skincare ingredients and what they do. Antioxidants, for example, are great for aging skin while hyaluronic acid is excellent for alleviating dry skin. Retinol is an all-round superstar for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, fading discoloration, improving skin tone, and treating acne. You don't have to know everything, but a little skincare wisdom goes a long way!

#5: Wear Sunscreen Every Day
SPF is a daily staple in any skincare routine. Derms and doctors recommend wearing it daily and reapplying it often -- even when it's cloudy.
Wearing sunscreen daily helps protect against premature signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. Regardless of the time of year, sunscreen should be worn anytime you leave the house and expose your skin to UV rays. Layer it over a vitamin C serum for added protection against free radicals.

#6 - Add clay and sheet masks into your skincare routine
A go-to skincare resolution for 2022 would be to include clay and sheet masks into your routine. Bentonite clay is highly beneficial when it comes to combating oily skin. Known for its absorbing and toning properties, it removes oil, dirt, dead skin and helps prevent pore-clogging, which ultimately can prevent breakouts. On the other hand, sheet masks with moisturising, brightening and firming benefits packs quite a punch.

Antioxidants are potent in protecting the skin from oxidative damage. Apply antioxidant-rich skincare products regularly, especially at the start of the day. Also, a diet rich in antioxidants vitamins A, C and E helps to fend off free radical damage to our cells. Taking a daily multivitamin is an excellent way to ensure you are providing your skin with the micronutrients it needs.

#8. Wash Your Makeup Brushes More Than Once A Year
A breeding ground for bacteria and dirt, your makeup brushes are your greatest tool and your greatest enemy. Don’t worry, we’re not going to get all high and mighty and pretend like we religiously wash our brushes each week. But we will tell you that our 2022 resolution to clean our brushes at least once or twice a month is one you should be adding to your list too.
